I don’t know that there is much that can compare to feelings of bass reverberating through my body while my eyes take in the sight of one of my favorite bands playing an awesome song – just a scant few feet in front of me! – and my ears transporting the lyrics to my brain, causing my head to bob and my lips to smile widely, singing along. Seeing and hearing live music is an experience like no other.

Last week’s Portland-area stop on the Rockstar Uproar Festival tour was hours and hours of rock and roll awesomeness. Fans who showed up for only the big bands – Staind, Godsmack, and Shinedown – did themselves a disservice, as the bands who played the Jagermeister and Ernie Ball stages put on kick-ass after kick-ass show.

Attika 7

I’d never heard Mindset Evolution, P.O.D., or Fozzy but after hearing them live, they have at least one new fan. The highlight of the small stage shows, for me, was undoubtedly when Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D. launched himself into the crowd, trailing a mic cord and continuing to sing while fans tossed him about. Sandoval, wearing a Wu-Tang Clan t-shirt, was joined by a female fan, who shouted lyrics with him to the delight of fans supporting both of them with their hands.Starting shortly after 1 p.m. in the gravel lot outside the grassy, manicured Sleep Country Amphitheater and pounding nearly non-stop until about 11 p.m. within the Amphitheater walls, band after band thrilled fans of every shape and age.

 Sonny Sandoval, P.O.D.

The circle pit that Attika 7 called forth teemed with young kids and adults old enough to be their grandparents, with gray hair and wrinkles to testify to their age. Fueled by free Rockstar beverages and internal energy from the excitement of the music, fans of hard rock enjoyed the best show of the waning summer.

Kazzer of Redlight King

Until the next festival comes to town to generously expand my music catalog, I’ll be enjoying these new-to-me bands on my favorite internet radio station and eagerly anticipating more live energy and body throbbing tunes.

I can’t wait.
